Johannesburg - Professor Jakes Gerwel is still ill in hospital, his son Heinrich Gerwel said on Tuesday.
"His condition has not changed; he is very ill, but is in excellent care," he said.
The family would make a formal statement at some stage, but asked for privacy at this time, he said.
In a statement issued on behalf of the family on Monday, it said Gerwel was in a critical condition following heart surgery.
The family had to clarify that he was not dead, as had earlier been reported on Twitter.
Prominent figure
Gerwel, 66, is a well-known figure in South Africa's political history and in his later years he has chaired or been on the board of major organisations and corporations.
His early life's work was mostly as an academic in roles which included educational adviser to the SA Students' Organisation, as a lecturer, as chancellor of Rhodes University, and later as rector of the University of the Western Cape.
He was also director general in the office of former president Nelson Mandela.
In his later years, he has been chairperson of Media24 and Life Healthcare, and is also chairperson of the board of trustees of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.
