Getaway car overturns, robber caught

2011-03-22 22:56

Johannesburg - A security guard chased several robbers, leading to one man being arrested, after they stole a cash box at an East London shopping centre, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Three men confronted a cash-in-transit guard and took his gun and cash box at the Amalinda shopping centre in Cambridge around 14:00, Captain Mluleki Mbi said. They fled in a bakkie parked nearby.

"The cash-in-transit vehicle driver noticed the incident and gave chase after the robber's vehicle."

The robbers fired shots at the van, but the driver was uninjured.

"The security van managed to ram the robber's vehicle at the back, it overturned and four suspects managed to flee. One suspect was trapped inside the bakkie with injuries to his leg."

The man, in his thirties, was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard. He was expected to appear in the East London Magistrate's Court soon on charges of armed robbery.

Two guns, including the guard's, and the money box were recovered from the getaway bakkie.
