Rustenburg - Medical doctors will attend Marikana mineworkers and their families this weekend, Gift of the Givers said on Friday.

"Our doctors will be in Marikana at 12:00 on Saturday," said spokesperson Emily Thomas in a text message.

Gift of the Givers is one of the humanitarian organisations providing food parcels to families of mineworkers in the platinum belt in the North West.

Seipati Mmekwa used a portion of her husband's pension to start a soup kitchen. She started with 60 people at the Wonderkop Clinic and the number has risen to over 200.

Trade union Solidarity's Helping Hands project also distributed food in Brits, Mooinooi, and Rustenburg.

Mineworkers and their families have had to rely on hand-outs since the start of the strike in the platinum mining sector in January.

Member of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) at Impala Platinum, Lonmin, and Anglo American Platinum downed tools on 23 January demanding a basic salary of R12 500 per month.

They rejected the companies' offer that would bring their cash remuneration to R12 500 by July 2017.

Mediation brokered by the labour court continued on Friday at an undisclosed location in Johannesburg.
