Johannesburg - An 11-year-old girl was rescued after being trapped in a drain pipe in Izingolweni on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Thursday, paramedics said.

"Reports are that the children were playing around the pipes when she slipped buttocks first down the pipe and got wedged in the narrow opening," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Paramedics were unable to cut through the pipe and decided to put oil around the girl's body and then gently pull her out.

"After about 45 minutes they managed to free her," said Botha.

The girl was unharmed in the accident.
