Johannesburg - A five-year-old girl was raped in Flagstaff, allegedly by her uncle who was supposed to look after her, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Captain Mdududzi Godlwana said the rape occurred at around 20:00 at Sphaqeni village on Sunday.

"When the mother returned and asked the uncle where the child was, he didn't respond.

"The mother searched for the child and found her under the bed bleeding from the lower body."

Police were called and the man was arrested and charged with rape.

He was expected to appear in the Flagstaff Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Girl raped on way to school

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old girl was raped while on her way to school in Willowvale.

She was walking with a group of other children when a 19-year-old man appeared and allegedly grabbed her, police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The other children managed to run away when he charged at them.

The girl was taken to a bushy area where she was raped.

The man, known to local residents, fled the scene. Police expected to make an arrest soon.
