East London - A girl was killed when the driver of a school bus drove over her and a schoolmate in Stormsriver, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Jamelee Martin, 7, died on Monday afternoon, spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said.

"Another 7-year-old boy was seriously injured when [he and Jamelee] allegedly fell and landed under the vehicle that dropped them off," Swart said.

The boy was admitted to Kareedouw hospital. He was still in a serious condition.

The driver, 41, reversed his bus after leaving 10 pupils at a drop-off point. According to Swart, he did not see the pupils had gone to the back of the bus and jumped onto the tow bar and bumper.

As he reversed, the pupils fell off and the two were run over.

The bus was travelling from Woodlands Primary School towards Robhoekfarm in Stormsriver, Swart said.

No arrests had been made yet. Police opened a case of culpable homicide.
