Durban - A 9-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after she was caught in a shootout between her father and a robber at their Sherwood home.

Maseeha Baig, the granddaughter of former Sydenham councillor Yacoob Baig, was recovering in hospital after a bullet grazed her thigh, reported the Daily News.

Her father, Ridwaan Baig, said his daughter had been in the main bedroom on Wednesday evening when an armed man grabbed her while two accomplices raided their home.

“I heard screaming and ran from the back of the house to the lounge,” said Baig,

“I told the guy to let her go but he fired at me and I pulled my gun from my holster and fired at him.”

He shot the robber in the upper body and when he fell down, the other robbers fled. The man died on the scene.

Baig’s two children, his brother, wife and mother were at home at the time of the incident.

“One of the men then went into the bedroom, where he pulled Maseeha by her T-shirt, taking her into the lounge. He was holding her hostage,” said Baig.
