Johannesburg - A 12-year-old girl drowned in a dam in George on Wednesday, paramedics said.

Three girls, aged between 10 and 12, had gone swimming to cool off, ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said.

"Two of the girls later told rescue workers that they felt as if they were becoming stuck in the muddy bottom."

They got out of the dam, but lost sight of their friend, and told their parents. Police divers removed the missing girl's body from the dam. She was declared dead at the scene.

We have seen this so many times. Inland bodies of water is where the most drownings occur. If you have to enter, then stay on the surface. Swim. Do not dive deep or try to stand on a muddy bottom. Sandy/rocky bottoms are fine.
