Johannesburg - A four-year-old girl drowned after falling into a residential swimming pool in Klerksdorp, paramedics said on Sunday.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the child was pulled from the swimming pool on Saturday afternoon by a family member who called rescuers.
"Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the girl breathless and with no pulse," he said.
They started CPR and, despite their best efforts to revive her, the child was declared dead on arrival at a nearby private hospital.
The cause of the incident and the events leading up to it remain uncertain, Wicks said, and police would investigate.
"Common cause indicates that the girl had fallen into the uncovered swimming pool and was immersed for a prolonged period," Wicks said.
