Girl shot dead during exam protest

2010-09-14 13:02
Welkom - Police shot dead a high school pupil during a protest against matric preliminary exams at a Free State school, the Independent Complaints Directorate said on Tuesday.

IDC spokesperson Moses Dlamini said police claimed they were pelted with stones when they arrived at the Wesi and Mosala secondary schools, in Nyallong, Allanridge just before 11:00 on Monday.

"One officer fired a warning shot which hit the ground then went up and struck the girl," he said.

Nobtsikelelo Anna Nokela, 17, was rushed to hospital in a police van, but was declared dead on arrival, he said.

Dlamini said the ICD was investigating a case of murder, but nobody had been charged yet.
