Nagel said Naledi Ndebele was playing at a neighbour's house in Majwe Masweu at about 18:45 on Sunday.
She was fetched by an unknown woman, said her friend.
Nagel said Naledi, who lived with her grandmother, did not come home, her grandmother reported her missing.
"On Monday morning police members continued with the search but to no avail," said Nagel.
The body was discovered at about 18:00 on Monday wrapped in a sheepskin under a bush in the nearby veld, about 800m from the neighbour's house.
"Naledi was fully clothed with markings on the neck but the cause of death is unknown."
A post-mortem would be conduct to establish the cause of death.
Police said the girl's parents live in Johannesburg and arrived in Brandfort on Tuesday afternoon.
