Cape Town - Cabinet has urged all unregistered voters to register with the Independent Electoral Commission this weekend.

"Cabinet encourages all South Africans, especially young and first-time voters, to... register on 9 and 10 November [to vote]," Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane told reporters in Cape Town on Thursday, following Cabinet's fortnightly meeting the day before.

He said Cabinet was seeking a large turnout of voters in the 2014 elections.

All home affairs department offices would be open to assist those needing the necessary documents, Chabane said.

The IEC said on Wednesday all 22 263 voting stations around the country would be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday for people to register, change their registration details or verify their details.
