Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela's wife Graça Machel has spoken about her husband's condition, saying he is "sometimes uncomfortable" but is "fine".

She was speaking at the launch of the Nelson Mandela Sport & Culture Day 2013 at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory on Thursday.

Machel said she was attending the event for several reasons, but first to say "thank you, thank you, thank you" for the support for the former president since his hospitalisation on 8 June.

She said that even while lying in hospital, Madiba has given us yet another gift – for all of us to be united, according to a tweet from EWN.

"Madiba is sometimes uncomfortable. Sometimes he is in pain. But he is fine," she was quoted as saying.

"I want to take this opportunity in the presence of ministers and the sport fraternity to again thank you for the outpouring and humbling demonstration of love, the care and the support of hope," Machel said, according to Sapa.

"We have taken it into our hearts every single day. It is important to find the occasion to tell every person that humbled himself to pray for us... that God is listening but we are also taking note."

The launch was attended by members of the sporting fraternity and dignitaries including Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile, and Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula.
