2012-07-19 10:09

Pretoria - A Pretoria toddler is fighting for her life in hospital after she was accidentally shot in the stomach.

Beeld reported that the 4-year-old girl had been injured when the girl’s grandfather wanted to take something out of the cupboard and his gun fell down from the top.

The gun discharged by accident and the little girl was hit in the stomach.

She was rushed to the Unitas hospital in Centurion where she was in a critical condition.

I hope the owner of the fire arm was charged with attempted murder negligence and the fire arm confiscated and his license revoked forever .

      christopher.columbus.3950178 - 2012-07-19 10:36

Bru..if South Africa did not have crime...yes I would agree with you. Unfortunately South Africa is crime riddled and sometimes you need to protect yourself, otherwise the statistic could have read Grandparents raped and murdered. It was a very unfortunate accident. May that beautiful little girl come through this one...

      cliff.slabbert - 2012-07-19 10:44

A bit harsh Gavin but he should have had his fire arm in a safe.

      koo.doyle - 2012-07-19 11:10

For heaven's sake it was an accident, where is your compassion???? Don't you think the knowledge that he harmed his granddaughter is punishment enough? Do you really think he belongs in prison, with rapists and murderers who have deliberately hurt people? Get a grip.

      chris.cunning.14 - 2012-07-19 11:47

@Christopher/koo: I fully agree, he should store the gun in a safe, unloaded. To place the gun clearly on edge in his cupboard and loaded is really negligent. I think he should be punished.

  • storm.trooper.125 - 2012-07-19 10:25

REGULATIONS SAYS.. NO BULLET MUST BE IN THE CHAMBER AND WEAPON MUST BE IN A SAFE AT HOME. GRANDDAD YOU GUILTY.. AND PLS DONT TEL ME THE BULLET IS IN THE CHAMBER FOR THE CRIMINALS..YOU JUST PUT YOUR OWN FAMILY AT RISK

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-19 10:39

      CLUTCHPLATE!

      Koos - 2012-07-19 10:40

So you’d rather leave a whole family defenseless and at the mercy of criminals because of an accident? I was once in a situation where we all thought the gun was safe but for some reason a round got stuck in the chamber and the well trained and competent person did not notice the round where it got stuck. That gun went off as well. Luckily no one was hurt but it could easily have gone wrong. I agree that this should not have happened but accidents do happen and this is the worst case scenario for a family as far as accidents go. Heaven only knows what the grandpa must be going through. Hope the girl will be alright.

      storm.trooper.125 - 2012-07-19 10:40

SO YOU SAY THE LAW IS WRONG???

      chez.kri - 2012-07-19 11:52

@Koos. Lots of people don't carry guns. You think this justifies having a gun in the house? Our family has a saying. "If you want to shoot me, bring your own gun" Sadly, there are too many robberies where guns are stolen or used to kill the house owner - never mind the accidents like this.

      douglasnorval - 2012-07-19 11:53

I am afraid you are partially wrong Storm.trooper, the safe yes, but there is absolutely nothing in the law about no bullets inb the chamber etc. @oneant, where does it say that it was cocked and not on safety? It doesnt even say whether it was a pistol or a revolver! It is very likely that this fiream will be confiscated and the owner charged according the the firearms act on top of the remorse he will feel for the injury to his granddaughter.

      Koos - 2012-07-19 12:42

@chez.kri: Must be nice where you live. Would love to send you a few news paper clippings of what is happening where I live. They come (with their own guns and bolt cutters) at 10AM, 3AM, 9PM, hell when they want. They come in while you are inside. They look you in the eye, pointing a firearm at you while his friend is kicking down the door. Alarm or not, they don’t stop. You try to keep the door closed they shoot you through the door. You don’t open the door they shoot and they know most people have been disarmed. Well I guess if you don’t want to give you and your family a fighting chance then it is up to you but I can tell you that if it wasn’t for firearms, I have no doubt that me and my family would be dead now 4 times over. I’ll take the risk of accidents but I’d rather die than hand over my family to these criminal mongrels!

Please stand up, your voice is really muffled.

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 11:53

Your voice is very muffled, you should stand up.

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 12:11

If you can't say something slightly intelligent then shut it. Making up your own laws is a bad advert for your IQ.

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 12:12

      Lies and nonsense you fool.

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 12:16

What law or regulation. Did you suck this out of your big toe or was it just a really big brain-fart that you couldn't keep in.??

  • tednhet - 2012-07-19 10:32

What a terrible accident, But the law is the law.Pray to god that the little child be ok.

  • brander.mba - 2012-07-19 10:37

Oh no not again, last month it was a father and the daughter died, I hpoe and pray the little girl makes it. Please parents let's keep our guns in a safe place.

  • tandi.freeman - 2012-07-19 10:39

How awfully sad!!I hate guns..cause more harm than good!!!

      paul.oxley.520 - 2012-07-19 11:33

That's the equivalent of blaming spoons for making people fat. Stop placing blame on inanimate objects, it's irrational and makes you sound stupid. This incident was caused by a man doing something stupid. If he had stored a hammer on top of his cupboard and had brained the urchin it would be the same.

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 11:55

Blame the idiot, idiot; and and not the tool.

  • andrejcarstens - 2012-07-19 10:41

Fell out of the cupboard? Why is the gun not in a safe when you have a little child in the house? That is very poor form from the granddad. Regards to her family, hope she makes it.

  • tshikani.kwinika.1 - 2012-07-19 10:49

Let the Angels of God surround her in Jesus Name Amen

      zaatheist - 2012-07-19 11:07

Matthew 6:1- “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. - Matthew 6:6

      zaatheist - 2012-07-19 11:09

Better get down on your knees quickly and beg forgiveness tshikani.kwinika.1 because the imaginary sky daddy is going to none too pleased with you praying in public.

      - Good stuff, ZA. I'm stealing it! :)

  • lorrainesuh - 2012-07-19 11:08

What a tragedy. Let's hope the little girl recovers. I always thought a gun is kept in a safe and not on top of a cupboard.

  • marleze.baartman - 2012-07-19 11:13

The world is a mess because of guns, poor little girl.

      Stirrer - 2012-07-19 11:20

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. The world was a mess before guns were invented. Did the Romans or Mongols have guns?

      paul.oxley.520 - 2012-07-19 11:35

The world is in a mess because of people. Stupid people make more of a mess than clever people. Don't be a stupid person.

      kimsaiyanprincess.murison - 2012-07-19 11:47

      - People are fat because of spoons/forks. People rape because of mini skirts. People die in crashes because there are cars. People have bad haircuts because of scissors. None of these things were caused by the human condition, but by inanimate objects calling to them.

      Stirrer - 2012-07-19 11:59

      @kimwhatever.murison: Huh?!

      don.quioxte.3 - 2012-07-20 11:56

No, fool. The world is a mess because of ? ?..............You got it. FOOLS.!!!!!

  • bev.armstrong.372 - 2012-07-19 11:16

What a distasteful advert to appear at the end of the article. It should be removed immediately. How to use someones agony to sell a funeral policy. Nice one Old Mutual!

      Stirrer - 2012-07-19 11:56

Of all the dof people commenting you must surely take first prize. The ads appear at random, the advertiser has NO control over it.

      zaatheist - 2012-07-19 12:05

Don't be so dumb bev. When Old Mutual paid for the Ad yonks ago they would not know what articles N24 would posted above it. Get a life. You seem to be a very unhappy person.

      Stirrer - 2012-07-19 12:42

@zaatheist: What's happening?! We are in agreement over something! HAS THE WORLD GONE CRAZY?!!!

  • percy.mosimane - 2012-07-19 11:26

    wishing her a speedy recovery..

  • paul.oxley.520 - 2012-07-19 11:28

Nothing accidental about this. It was negligence!

  • Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2012-07-19 11:31

So he keeps a loaded gun, with the safety "off" in a cupboard? It was an accident waiting to happen. Poor girl.

      warwick.railton.7 - 2012-07-19 11:47

I know someone who did just that................and wasted the turd holding up his family & stopped a rape. A slip second later, he would have been dead trying to 'arm' the weapon. Stupid people are accidents waiting to happen............

  • Happyness - 2012-07-19 11:36

Now how come some of you people are all up in arms against the Grandad, yet that father who shot his daughter on the head received nothing but sympathy? The gun was on top of the cupboard- easier access in case of emergency, no? The gun fell and it went off- did he actually shoot her? No, not like the father who fired a shot before he even saw who it was. Yes he was protecting his family. Accidents happen. This guy was getting something out the cupboard, the gun fell out. Accidents happen. Speedy recovery to the little girl.

  • warwick.railton.7 - 2012-07-19 11:44

Probably fewer than 2% of handguns and well under 1% of all guns will ever be involved in a violent crime. Thus, the problem of criminal gun violence is concentrated within a very small subset of gun owners, indicating that gun control aimed at the general population faces a serious needle-in-the-haystack problem. When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state"."One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms." and lastly - "...quemadmodum gladius neminem occidit, occidentis telum est." [...a sword never kills anybody; it's a tool in the killer's hand.] I hope the little dear pulls through, what a tragic ACCIDENT.

  • Lyn Marais Bauer - 2013-08-26 09:45

So easy for people to point fingers. What a sad and tragic accident. I pray the little girl survives and the Grandfather can find peace.
