Grandfather pleads guilty to sexual assault

Johannesburg - A 58-year-old businessman and grandfather pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

"According to police information, the man sexually abused his 4-year-old and 7-year-old granddaughters," said Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

Naidu said the children were staying next door to their grandfather in Humansdorp when the abuse happened.

"The children reported the sexual abuse to their mother just before Christmas. The man was arrested on Monday.

"During his second appearance today, he pleaded guilty and was released on R5 000 bail."

The children remain in the custody of their parents and the bail conditions state that he is not allowed to reside in the Humansdorp area.

The case was postponed to March 2 for sentencing, said Naidu.

"It is of great concern that in many instances it is the very people who should be trusted such as mothers, fathers, friends and relatives who are perpetrators of these heinous crimes," she said.
