Granny accused of strangling baby
Johannesburg - A 60-year-old Eastern Cape woman appeared in court on Wednesday for allegedly killing her 3-month-old granddaughter in Willowvale.
Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said Ntombizanele Liwani, 60, was granted R1 000 bail by the Willowvale Magistrate's Court. The matter was postponed to May 18.
Manatha said the baby was strangled in Chafutweni village on Sunday after her mother and aunt left the house to fetch water.
"It is alleged that the three women did not report the death of the child on the date in question and then slept with the corpse of the baby."
Police were notified on Monday and the three women were arrested. The mother and aunt were later released, as they were not implicated.
