Johannesburg - Two people were killed and 31 others injured on Wednesday in a multiple vehicle crash involving four trucks, 12 cars, and a taxi on the N4 outside Pretoria, Tshwane emergency services said.

"Of the 31 people, three were critical, nine serious and 19 were slightly injured," spokesperson Johan Pieterse said.

"We have finished on the scene and the police have taken over to investigate, despite the accident being caused by a grass fire. The smoke crossed the road and people did not slow down, causing the pile-up."

Pieterse said the N4 was still closed between the De Wildt and Ga-Rankuwa off ramps, direction west to Rustenburg at 15:30.

"Police are busy clearing the scene and getting all the evidence. It might still be closed for another hour," he said.
