Green Scorpions strike

Johannesburg - A Spanish man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport for illegally exporting endangered wildlife products, the Green Scorpions said on Monday.

He was intercepted at the airport on Sunday with caracal and leopard skins, a rifle bag, elephant ivory sculptures, jewellery and pens, and shoes and rings made from elephant products, said spokesperson Tshepo Shawa.

"He also had three lion claws with him," said Shawa.

"This breakthrough is part of the Green Scorpion's commitment to environmental law enforcement, particularly in the country's international transit areas," he said.

The Green Scorpions are environment inspectors for the agriculture department.

Shawa said enforcement would intensify during the festive season and over the Fifa Soccer World Cup next year.
