Kimberley - Convicted Griekwastad killer Don Steenkamp is expected to submit his appeal against his conviction and sentence on Tuesday.

The Diamond Fields Advertiser reported that the 14-day window period for his defence to submit notice to appeal expires on Tuesday, and it is expected that this will be handed over in time.

According to the report, heads of argument can be submitted at a later stage.

Steenkamp was found guilty in March of killing his father, Deon, 44, mother, Christel, 43, and sister, Marthella, 14, in April 2012. He was also found guilty of raping Marthella and defeating the ends of justice by lying to the police.

He was sentenced to 20 years for each murder, 12 years for rape, and four years for defeating the ends of justice. The sentences will run concurrently.

Volksblad reported that an informed source said the appeal application was complete and would be submitted in time.

According to the report, the appeal will be a test case for the Child Justice Act, which has been in operation for three years. There is apparently still uncertainty on how the law in all its facets should be applied.

The case has already tested the Act in various ways, including Steenkamp's arrest and bail. This is reportedly the first time an application for leave to appeal will be tested.
