Cape Town - A grinder and hammer were used to open a vault at the Carnival City casino which was stormed by about 25 people early on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain Julia Claassen, said the suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

The gang ordered patrons to lay on the floor, Claassen said.

“As they fled the casino they injured six bystanders, one was shot, [but] not in a critical condition, and five were assaulted,” Claassen told News24.

ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, said the six patrons sustained scrapes and bruises and one woman was assaulted with a rifle.

A witness identified a group of 25 individuals with rifles.

A shift manager at the casino alerted the police and a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and police.

Two private security guards and one police reservist was shot.

All three were taken to hospital and are in a critical condition.
The suspects are still at large and the police have initiated a search operation.
