Johannesburg - A security guard has been arrested after allegedly shooting dead a train commuter at the Mayfair railway station in Johannesburg, police said on Monday.

The man and two other passengers got into an argument with the 29-year-old guard on Saturday when he saw them drinking alcohol on the platform and told them to stop, said Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

When the men started assaulting him, the guard pulled out a firearm and fired three shots into the air.
Mbele said the men ignored the warning shots, and the guard then shot one of them, aged 24.

"The man was certified dead on the scene and the guard was arrested and his firearm confiscated," he said.

He was expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder.
