Guard helps rapist escape Eastern Cape jail

2011-11-15 08:54

Johannesburg - A man has escaped from the Mdantsane Correctional Centre outside East London after being assisted by a guard, said officials on Monday.

Luzuko Tabata, 27, escaped on Saturday after being escorted outside the prison by a guard around 13:30, said Correctional Services spokesperson Zamuxolo Femi.

The guard returned around 16:45 and when confronted, denied he had escorted Tabata outside the building. After being shown video footage doing so, the guard confirmed Tabata was not brought back.

The guard was suspended and a case of aiding an escape was opened by police.

Tabata, from Queenstown, was serving a 34-year sentence for rape.

Femi said if the public had any information on Tabata's whereabouts, they should contact their nearest police station.

What a dumb ass. Put that idiot in the now vacant cell.

Clearly intelligence is not a factor taken into consideration when hiring Correctional Service personnel, all you need is an ANC membership card.

I disagree with you, there are many committed and well educated personnel in DCS. And it has nothing to do with ANC membership. Its all about the weak and greedy individual, who will do anything for an extra cent. This act is really stupid and he deserve to be put in jail.

Imagine employing a crimnal as a guard to look after crimnals - how is the employment process done? How stupid of this guy - puts his whole family in the jobless line then complains. Just for a few extra bob (so to say) without regard to his important job and place of work and family.

get that guard locked up, no bail, and give him that 34 years to serve out, seriously, even if the one he helped escape is caught and brought back to serve out a more lengthy sentence or not

Should this convict rape again while on the outside the guard must also be charged with the same crime, 'cause it'll directly be his fault!
