Durban - A suspected robber was shot dead and a security guard wounded in a shoot-out during a cash-in-transit heist at a bank in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

The security guards were collecting cash from the bank at 11:30 on Wednesday when they were attacked by four men armed with firearms, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

"The security guards returned fire, fatally wounded one of the suspects who had robbed them. The remaining three suspects sped-off in their getaway vehicle leaving the money and their dead accomplice behind," Naicker said.

He said police had previously been given the wrong information about the condition of the security guard. The guard was shot and wounded, and not dead as reported earlier.

Members of the Empangeni K9 unit and Ntambana police station responded to the robbery, spotted the getaway vehicle and gave chase.

"When they ordered the vehicle to stop, the suspects opened fire on police. Police officers returned fire and two of the suspects were wounded in the ensuing shoot-out," Naicker said.

The two wounded men, ages 29 and 37, were arrested while a third escaped on foot.

Police found an AK-47 assault rifle and two 9mm pistols.

The two men will be charged with robbery, murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. They will appear in the Empangeni Magistrate's Court soon.

A search has been launched for the fourth participant in Wednesday's robbery.
