Guard shoots robber during break-in

2012-06-25 12:44

Johannesburg - A female security guard shot and wounded a suspected tile thief who pretended to have a gun early on Monday morning, said Soweto police.

The woman was guarding a storeroom, behind Jabulani Mall, filled with construction materials, when two men broke in and allegedly tried to steal tiles, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele.

"When she saw them, she told them to stop, but one man pretended as if he had a gun," he said.

"Then the security guard pulled out her gun and shot at the suspect."

A 22-year-old man was wounded in the left leg. He was arrested and was under police guard in hospital.

As soon as he was discharged, he would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on a theft charge.

Police were still searching for the other man.

Makhubele said the guard's gun had been confiscated and sent for ballistics testing.

A female security guard? what is the relevance of that? Had it been a male security guard would they have said ...shot by a male security guard?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-06-25 13:34

Standard procedure, nothing to worry about...

      Sagin - 2012-06-25 15:43

Standard proceedure. Yes, but for how long does she have to do her job unprotected. its a dumb proceedure that leaves those on the right side of the law vulnerable to those who are not.

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-06-25 13:31

That picture of a gun is disturbing.

  • Eddie - 2012-06-25 13:32

What a load of crap! - Ballistic testing??? - Give the guard a medal and a fat cheque. Ed Golding.

      cosmic.tone.3 - 2012-06-25 13:37

Agreed, why send in the gun for tests?, hope she gets issued with another one before the "friend" comes back.

  • Eddie - 2012-06-25 13:36

    Thumbs up my sister..

  • Mart - 2012-06-25 13:42

A huge 'up' to this security official. Criminals have the mindset that they are untouchable. I hope there is some serious damage to his leg and that he never be able to walk unassisted again. In fact this should become 'standard procedure' when arresting suspects. If you personally, and at least 1 credible witness are 80 % sure the offender is guilty.....smash a knee cap, and I mean smash it so that it cannot ever be repaired.!

      Blanco Ntini - 2013-10-28 08:31

@Lungu: Red October invites you join them.

  • Eddie - 2012-06-25 13:50

This guard is a very good shot, and clever too. She knows that it is no use shooting them in the head. Ed Golding

  • Caiphus Molatelo Mahlaka - 2012-06-25 13:59

If it was our men in blue he could have been dead by now,Cause to them arresting a thief who is alive is a problem

      Rory Neil Price - 2012-06-25 20:15

If it was the men in Blue my friend they would've been bribed

  • Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-25 14:06

Good for her! She deserves a pay raise and a nice holiday

  • Phillip du Plessis - 2012-06-25 14:15

    Give that girl a bells!!

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-06-25 14:34

What ballistics? You know where the shot came from and why but you still wanna test? Other than leacving her vulnerable I think it puts unnecessary pressure on her.

  • justin.hall.355138 - 2012-06-25 15:31

Where is this lady? I wanna give her bih hug! Pitty wasn't the head.

  • Hermann - 2012-06-25 15:59

Yea the guard is now in terms of modern practice a suspect in attempted murder. Good for her and I hope next time round she eliminates on a permanent basis.

  • gailcarolynhayes - 2012-06-25 18:28
