Johannesburg - A female security guard shot and wounded a suspected tile thief who pretended to have a gun early on Monday morning, said Soweto police.

The woman was guarding a storeroom, behind Jabulani Mall, filled with construction materials, when two men broke in and allegedly tried to steal tiles, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele.

"When she saw them, she told them to stop, but one man pretended as if he had a gun," he said.

"Then the security guard pulled out her gun and shot at the suspect."

A 22-year-old man was wounded in the left leg. He was arrested and was under police guard in hospital.

As soon as he was discharged, he would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on a theft charge.

Police were still searching for the other man.

Makhubele said the guard's gun had been confiscated and sent for ballistics testing.
