Gun in victim's wrong hand raises alarm

Johannesburg - A student constable has been shot dead in his flat in Bohlokong near Bethlehem, Free State police said on Tuesday.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the student constable was found with a gunshot in his head on December 1. "He had his service pistol in his hand and magazine with live rounds," said Mophiring.

He said the police went to his flat after he failed to report for work.

He was among a group of police officers who conducted a road block on November 30 and was expected to book in his service pistol on December 1.

"Our members were suspicious because the firearm was in his left hand though he was not left handed."

A 27-year-old man who was the last person seen with him was arrested on Monday after he was questioned about the incident.

He was expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
