Gunman shoots three joggers

2011-01-09 14:18

Johannesburg - Three joggers have been shot and injured in three separate incidents on Sunday morning in Polokwane, Limpopo police said.

"Police have opened three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after three men who were jogging in Bendor in Polokwane were shot at by an unknown gunman," said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.

The men, two aged 47 and one aged 42, were jogging separately at about 09:00 near the corner of De Wet and Schalk streets when they were shot at.

Two of the men were shot in the thigh and the other man was shot in the buttocks.

They were able to walk to a nearby petrol station where they were picked up by an ambulance and taken to a local hospital.

All three have since been discharged.

"Preliminary investigations show that an air rifle used for shooting birds was used... Motive for the shooting has not yet been established."

Ramatseba appealed to anyone with information about the shooting to contact Lieutenant Colonel Angie Maloma on 082-565-8073.

Please, this is an idiot with a pellet gun. Probably a naughty boy. A gunman? Shooting three joggers? Is such sensationalism really needed??

      Grant - 2011-01-09 15:12

@Willem - If your arse had been peppered you would not consider this sensationalism!! Have you become so desensitised to violence that these incidents are not a problem for you? If this is just the actions of a "naughty boy" in your book, how 'naughty' will he become if he gets away with this now - another Barend Strydom maybe? Just what we need.

      john - 2011-01-09 15:24

Grant, of course it's a problem. We just don't need reporting that hypes it. "Teen Ripper scores buttock hit in BB gun slaying orgy" would have sufficed.

      john - 2011-01-09 15:26

Or "Windbuks Willie Skiet Plat in die Gat" if you're Beeld.

      KanaMay - 2011-01-09 15:53

@ Grant. Over-grown brats like this shooter wants to be the centre of attention. Sensational articles about him could only encourage him to carry on this kind of mischief, and others like him will try to imitate him. Ignoring him as just an idiot will be the best punishment society-wise. Of course, he should get his arse bopped a few times, but that's for the police & victims to decide.

      Zinki - 2011-01-09 16:19

Reminds me a few years ago of a kid in France shooting cyclists taking part in the Tour de France.

      johnstonel32 - 2011-01-09 16:56

Idiot!! what if they were shot in the eye?? Maybe you should've been the one shot in the ass!! A gun is a gun, a shooting is a shooting, a crime is a crime .... and ... an idiot is an idiot Willem G

      Mike - 2011-10-24 22:55

Agree Willem, News24 have really out done themselves this time with sleazy sensation headlining. It's wrong and the person that did the shootings need his back side kicked and a serious talk.

  • Vuzi - 2011-01-09 15:15

I'm no ANC supporter, but when I read sensationalist crap like this I understand why the ANC hates the media so much.

      Grant - 2011-01-09 16:25

@Vuzi. I fail to see how this report is 'sensationalist crap'. It is a report based on known facts, using NO inflamatory language, NO editorial comment, No personal opions - just known facts, and ends with an appeal to anyone who may help with enquiries to come forward. Please help me here by qualifying your statement. Or would you prefer that the police make no attempt to sort this out??

      ArchAngel - 2011-10-22 13:12

@Grant: the headline to the article is pathetic. If you can't see that maybe you qualify to work for the Justice Department in South Africa. (do they actually have one?) In the article this "Preliminary investigations show that an air rifle used for shooting birds was used .. Motive for the shooting has not yet been established." was stated. How do they know this air rifle is used for shooting birds? How do they know it was an air-rifle? Should the headline not maybe have been "Unknown air-rifle/pistol wielding wanker wanted!" ? It is common understanding that the media, like your government, is anti-firearm and as such any inflammatory reference to "guns" is music to their ears. By these actions/sly manipulations they will continue to remove your Freedoms, one by one, with you as willing accomplices. What else else they willing to do?

Don't poo-poo a pellet gun. It would have been a different story if they had been shot in the eye or ear or temple...

      john - 2011-01-09 15:31

I don't think one of the victims will be poo-pooing at all for a couple of days. Not sitting down, anyway. :p

      Zinki - 2011-01-09 16:17

That's funny, John, but not for the victim concerned.

      ebdg3000 - 2011-01-09 17:49

John, that's very funny! Sorry it's at the expense of the victims but I'm sure they'd even manage a grimace ...

      Michelle - 2011-01-09 18:35

Yes, and I certainly wouldn't poo-poo being shot in the buttocks!

  • john - 2011-01-09 15:40

Incidentally, since when is an air rifle used "for shooting birds"? We're a real nation of nature lovers, we are.

      Zinki - 2011-01-09 16:17

More kids than you think shoot birds with pellet guns in town. They should be banned in built-up areas. - 2011-01-09 16:23

Obviously they have found this super high power gun, and questioned it, in which it replied that it's primarily used for bird shooting. It just doesn't state if its the feathery kind or not.

  • THE PUNISHER - 2011-01-09 16:15

Hierdie mannetjie kort n moerse pakslae. Jy skiet nie op onskuldige mense nie. Skiet juju se kar vol duike as jou gat jeuk

      Willem G - 2011-01-09 16:54

  • Lawrence - 2011-01-09 17:47

This is really poor journalism. Firstly - the "gunman" is some idiot shooting pellets, not a sniper with a high powered rifle. Secondly, there is no such thing as a airrifle designed for shooting birds, thats like saying someone was run over by a car designed for running over people. This Idiot deserves a big hiding/sentence/fine for such irresponsible behaviour.

  • ebdg3000 - 2011-01-09 17:51

OK, now imagine the outrage if this turns out to be a white boy shooting black joggers ...

      Zinki - 2011-01-09 18:42

I am sure we would have heard by now if it was that way!

      Hill - 2011-01-10 22:00

Ja dan sou dit n rasistiese effek vir ewig gehad het!!! As dit andersom is sal julle sien......niks weer sien nie!! Kry hom en maak werk van die ^%^%$# !!!! Wat of wie hy ook-al is!!!

  • Mark - 2011-01-09 21:02

What Bullock Sensationalism - Beware the Gunmen with the AirRifle - Please, what a joke, surely there is something more news worthy than a kid with a pellet gun which he got for Christmas shooting joggers in the buttocks...

  • wormyzn - 2011-01-10 10:56

Some board person shooting innocent people. And the media goes crazy like we have a serial killer on the loose. This in turn gets made into a big thing about firearm ownership and then we find Good Honest firearm owners get the bad rap. The media needs to report better.

  • Gary - 2011-01-10 13:43

How do they know the pellet gun was used to "shoot birds"?

      russ - 2011-01-24 15:35

I assume they meant the type of gun that was used is usually used to shoot birds - no way of telling yet if the particular gun ever shot a bird. Probably retrieved a pellet from the victim(s).
