Johannesburg - A total of 62 police officers were paid overtime for their work during the Gupta wedding, the Saturday Star reported.

In a parliamentary reply to the Inkatha Freedom Party, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the SA Police Service followed due process with regard to the matter.

His spokesperson Zweli Mnisi told the newspaper payments had been made to those officers who were on duty and not those found to be moonlighting.

Government launched an investigation into the wedding after it was found that wedding guests landed at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria in a private jet in April.

While correct permissions were not granted for the landing of the jet, the investigations found that the SAPS was "within its rights to treat the matter as requiring police involvement".

The involvement included police presence at the wedding in Sun City and co-ordination of the 121 car convoy.

However, investigations revealed that there was lack of vigilance by the officers as they allowed cars fitted with illegal blue lights to push people off the road.

A total of 62 police and 31 police vehicles from Gauteng were used at a cost of R47 000. In total 194 government personnel were involved.
