Chief of State Protocol suspended

Clayson Monyela explains the decision to place Chief of State Protocol Ambassador Bruce Koloane on compulsory leave with immediate effect.WATCH

Pretoria - Chief of state protocol Ambassador Bruce Koloane was suspended by the department of international relations and co-operation following a preliminary report on Waterkloof air base incident, the department said on Thursday morning.

The Gupta family landed a private jet at the air base for a lavish wedding at Sun City.

Almost 200 guests were flown in from India to the Pretoria base.

The Guptas claimed the High Commission of India submitted an application to use the base, which went through all the appropriate channels.

The international relations department’s Clayson Monyela said no executive authority was granted neither by either his department or the presidency to allow the aircraft to land at the air base.

“However it is clear that flight clearances were secured with the involvement of some government officials, hence the decision to suspend Koloane,” Monyela said in a tweet.

He also said all affected department, including the police, home affairs, international relations, Sars and defence, would be launching “extensive” investigations into the incident.

“Those found to have flouted policies, rules and laws will be dealt with accordingly.”

He said Koloane was put on compulsory leave with immediate effect to allow the department to get to the bottom of the matter.
