Cape Town – After promising to find a solution to a Pinelands mother and son's frustration, a Virgin Active spokesperson says the gym will design a workout that will address the autistic teenager's needs.

A report on Friday said Shannon Gukelberger had been angered by a staffer at a Virgin Active branch who told her that her son, Luc, wasn't allowed to join a class for children because the gym didn't cater for "children like that".

According to a statement, Virgin Active met with Gukelberger and Luc and apologised for the lack of sensitivity shown by the gym.

"After spending quality time with Luc and learning what he would like to achieve as a Virgin Active member, we all agreed that providing him with a dedicated trainer twice a week, rather than play time in Club V Max, which is specifically created for children under the age of 13, would help him with the goals he shared with us," said spokesperson Les Aupiais.

Aupiais said Luc wanted to improve his upper body strength and his leg muscles so that he can run faster and for longer distances.

"We are really pleased that by interviewing both Shannon and Luc, we will be able to design a special workout that addresses his needs."

Luc starts his training next week.
