HIV+ woman lies about eating cow dung

2012-03-29 09:17
Durban - An HIV-positive woman has admitted that she lied about having to eat cow dung before taking her anti-retrovirals in an attempt to get sympathy.

About one month ago, Sibongile Khumalo, 45, from Hluhluwe caused an outcry when she alleged in a local newspaper that she was so poor that she had to eat cow dung before taking her meds, reported the Daily News.

He story touched many and even prompted a visit by a KwaZulu-Natal MEC.

But it later transpired that there were no cows in the area and locals questioned where Khumalo would have gotten the cow dung.

After admitting that she had lied, Khumalo tried to blame an NGO, saying officials had told her to lie as it would improve her living conditions.

But a founder of Quedusizi, an organisation that provides food parcels, vehemently denied the allegation and said Khumalo should be charged with fraud.

Khumalo received child support grants for four children but a subsequent investigation revealed that she only had one child.

Khumalo has since been arrested and charged with fraud.
