HIV/Aids prevalence increases

Pretoria - The number of people living with HIV/Aids has increased by 0.2% from June last year until the same time this year, StatsSA said on Tuesday.

Releasing the mid-year population report, the government division said the estimated overall HIV/Aids prevalence rate was approximately 10.5% while the total number of people living with the disease was estimated at 5.24 million.

For adults aged between 15 and 49 years, an estimated 17% were infected and the total number of new HIV/Aids infections for 2010 was about 410 000.

Of these an estimated 40 000 were in children.

"For 2010, this release estimates that approximately 1.6 million people aged 15 and older, and approximately 183 000 children would be in need of ART," StatsSA said.
