Durban - A man accused of using a hammer to kill a teenager was unfit to stand trial, suicidal and possibly schizophrenic, according to a district surgeon's report submitted to the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The case against Siyanda Gift Ngubane, 19, was postponed to May 15 to allow him to be mentally assessed at the province's Fort Napier mental facility.

According to the report submitted to the court by District Surgeon Dr Omar Wawda, and seen by News24, Ngubane was unfit to stand trial.

The report noted that Ngubane may be schizophrenic and was suicidal.

At his previous appearance earlier this month, his mother Tholi Ngubane had told the court that her son had twice previously attempted to take his life.

Ngubane handed himself in to police last month at Durban's Hillcrest police station. He then allegedly led officers to an unused manhole in the Embo Reserve. He allegedly told officers that the devil had made him do it.

It was not revealed in court who the deceased was or what his relationship with Ngubane was.
