Polokwane - A fired handyman has been sentenced to 25 years for the murder of his employer on her farm in Lephalale in January, Limpopo police said on Friday.

Phillip Kgoantha, 22, overpowered Susan Kotze on her farm and strangled her with a wire coat hanger.

Seventy-six-year old Kotze was found dead in her home on January 6, when a friend could not get hold of her and became worried. A search led police to Kgoantha's uncle's farm in Northam and he was arrested a few days later.

He fled in her Bantam bakkie, taking two cellphones and cash.

After Kgoantha's arrest it emerged that he had worked for Kotze, but was fired. He had begged to be taken back so she let him do odd jobs around the farm.

He pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery, and so the Modimolle Regional Court sentenced him earlier on Friday to 15 years for murder and 15 years for armed robbery. Five years would run concurrently, putting him away for an effective 25 years.
