Johannesburg - The Hawks have denied reports that arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Rwanda's former spy chief Patrick Karegeya, saying the case is at a sensitive stage

On Wednesday, The New Age newspaper reported that three Rwandan nationals were arrested at a hotel in Maputo, Mozambique following the murder of Karegeya in a Sandton hotel last week.

According to the newspaper, a private investigator said the three were part of a hit squad targeting Rwandan opposition members.

However, the SABC later quoted Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko as saying that no arrests had been made at this stage. He further cautioned against the mention of individual names, saying there was a lot of sensitive information which needed to be verified before being released.

Ramaloko added that the Hawks were working closely with their Rwandan and Mozambican counterparts, and would brief the media at the appropriate time.
