Hawks man apologises for Jub Jub tweet

2012-10-19 07:04

Johannesburg - Hawks spokesperson Colonel McIntosh Polela has apologised on Twitter for a comment he posted about murder-convicted musician Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye.

"My tweet about Jub Jub on Tuesday nite [sic] was in poor taste," he said on Thursday.

"I profoundly regret posting [it] and hereby retract it. Je suis desole [I'm sorry]0".

On Tuesday, he tweeted about Maarohanye's first night in prison after he was convicted on four counts of murder, two of attempted murder, using drugs, racing on a public road, and driving under the influence of drugs.

His co-accused Themba Tshabalala was also convicted of the same charges in the Protea Magistrate's Court.

"I trust that JubJub's [sic] supporters gave him a jar of Vaseline to take to prison," Polela posted at the time.

His tweet made news headlines with many criticising him as a Hawks official.

One twitter user asked him: "What's Vaseline for in prison?," to which Polela replied, "Polishing specialized prison shoes!"

His Twitter account also says: "My tweets are 4 my tweeps. No publishing."

      neo.motsepe - 2012-10-19 07:51

Regardless of the humour, the point remains that, those words coming from Polela, was utterly stupid. Follow SAs are just following his path with senseless comments. That's low!

Polela you are no angel yourself. Remember your crime at the dive club in Umkomaas??? Is that how you became a colonel - to keep you quiet? Doug Meaker

Prison joke or not, funny how we all act as though we've never done anything wrong i mean raced, exceeded the speed limit or placed other peoples lives at risk just cause no one died in those incidents it dont make it any different.... some comments are purely out of envy that he owned a CooperS... Live and let Live

Jub Jub get ready, some ones going to eat your poop poop.

  • evert.vanstaaden - 2012-10-19 07:33

I don't see why he should be apologising.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-10-19 07:34

As a Hawks spokesperson it was stupid and barbaric of him,to joke about the barbaric acts that happens in prison.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-19 08:53

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Stop being sympathetic to those who murder, rape and steal from our citizens.

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-19 09:37

It wasn't done in his capacity as spokesperson. Lighten up already.

      jackie.m.dickson - 2012-10-19 09:47

I am very happy to know that people who break the law, and especially when they do this type of horrendous crime, are hopefully scared & tormented 24/7. Its not supposed to be a holiday. Back in they day they often had to do hard labour. We dont have the death penalty as a deterent to committing a crime so if this is what the living conditions are thats great. If "barbaric acts" happen in prison then great. Would you like them to be watching DSTV & movies on demand singing kum bah yah??? Definitely not! Hopefully wannabe criminals think twice about doing crime knowing where they will go & what will happen to them!

  • david.lebethe - 2012-10-19 08:13

Notwithstanding his attitude towards Jub-Jub, it was not up to Polela to make such a comment. His comment has brought the Hawks into disrepute and I am surprised that it has not reacted to the comment? However, on a personal level, Polela must know what goes round comes around. He is not immune to prosecution and would one day find himself in the same position as Jub-Jub.

  • ftakalani - 2012-10-19 08:17

Polela, u lack responsibility...u should know tht u are a public figure. Who were u trying to charm?

  • kg.mokwena.3 - 2012-10-19 08:20

    Polela should step down

  • fanie.viljoen.73 - 2012-10-19 08:28

Even the Hawks like to see crims get justice. Quite frankly, I like Mac a lot. Apology accepted.

  • Sbonelo Example Nene - 2012-10-19 08:30

this is not amusing guys Hawk man brought down his dignity but now he regrets himself....One day is one day what goes around, comes around....

  • neyo.mcmeslo - 2012-10-19 08:31

i know jub jub is wrong, but i really feel sorry for him, i dont think he did what happened intentionally.

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-19 09:42

You mean he took the drugs by accident, then got into the car by accident, then accelerated by accident down a busy street? Wake up, my friend.

  • aspruyt - 2012-10-19 08:39

Leave the man be, I found his sense of humour in good taste. People need to stop getting their panties in a knot over nothing. Get over yourselves!

      luvo.luvos - 2012-10-19 08:58

Yeah, true the man was merely stating the obvious as sodomy is the order of the day in jail. SA peeps can be very pathetic sometimes.

      cebi.zungu.5 - 2012-10-19 09:02

We are not pathetic. If it was only sodomy where both parties have agreed to do it, it would be fine. But in this case it is RAPE. Rape is not justified and I don't understand how would one make a joke about such.

      Goboza Mashaba - 2012-10-19 09:49

He's probably not a comedian but a custodian of law! That was so stupid and irresponsible of him to ever think we will be laughing at this! and hey you also need to check ur sense of humor bro!?!

  • sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-10-19 08:41

Too little too late- I also hate his 'we we we are going to arrest so

  • tshepokarabo.motshabi - 2012-10-19 08:41

The tweet posted by Mr Polela was uncalled for i personally didn't expect such from him after the respect i had for the man when i watched him on three talk talking about his book My Father My Monster (im hoping all of that wasn't just an act and you have a heart) but the man apologized so let it be

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-10-19 08:48

How did this guy suddenly become a colonel? And they made Bheki Cele a 'general'. No wonder the SAPS are in such a bad state. If Polela is a real colonel then I'm a flying nun!

  • Veliswa Zicina - 2012-10-19 09:08

Much ado about nothing. Polela is no different to others who were posting comments and tweeting about Jubjub. People must really stop obsessing about stupid things, I personally see nothing wrong in that tweet, just the media blowing things out of proportion as usual

same thing i was thinking :-\\

      cebi.zungu.5 - 2012-10-19 09:20

The media did not blow anything out of proportion. I saw the tweet myself. I did not expect a spokesperson of the law enforcement institute such as hawks to post a tweet that encourages rape in prison or that makes it sound like it is an acceptable practise. It is wrong, very wrong! No one ever deserves to be raped and it is rather disturbing that someone can find that to be amusing!

  • sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-10-19 09:13

The Man aint a COLONEL-he is a mere SPOKESPERSON with Journalism Qualificatins

  • kholofelo.theko - 2012-10-19 09:13

clearly Tosh is not fit to hold this office, he should be sacked.

  • hlengiwe.dube.7503 - 2012-10-19 09:14

One can only ask:"What was a well learned law official like him thinking"? Im sure he has the capacity to keep his disgusting thoughts to himself. If he thinks it funny for men to be victims of rape when they have to be rehabilitated, then he should spend one night in sun city with a barrel of vaseline. As a spokesperson for the Hawks, a worldwide well respected agency, he is basically saying that he condones rape in prison.Shame on you McIntosh. I hope you hang your head in shame for a long time! #smh#

      kholofelo.theko - 2012-10-19 11:01

I agree totally agree with your thoughts on this, it ain't no fun at all. There are some innocent people in prison who become victim of harderned criminals and have their lives distroyed by this inhumane behaviour which some people think it's funny.

  • cher.heystek - 2012-10-19 09:31

How come Malema can say whatever the hell he likes without getting any "heat" for it, but Polela has to apologise!? Double standards (by ANYONE'S standards)!!!!!! Truth be told, a tub of Vaseline will be to Jub Jub's advantage. He was being kind and considerate in suggesting what he did!

      Goboza Mashaba - 2012-10-19 09:52

Wat's this gotta do with Malema? Its Jubjub not Juju!

      Andrea - 2012-10-19 10:20

      what is the difference?

  • gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-19 09:32

It is still a well known reality of life behind bars, though.

  • Goboza Mashaba - 2012-10-19 09:46

Just like jubjub whose actions was not intendedon that fateful, Polela will ultimately pay for his irresponsible actions. whoever said there's sodomy in prisons? Dont just speculate on things you dont know! You going down Mc you going down!

  • rasthami.m1 - 2012-10-19 09:49

I would fire him like how the US run their structures if a low blow like this blows out in the public eye it surely questions the organisation and its fitness, this really is turning into a banana state *

  • Goboza Mashaba - 2012-10-19 09:50

If it was meant to be a joke, why arent we laughing?

@nyameko.somi - I agree. I'm glad that they didn't just "get away with it" - but lets face facts - neither of the two idiots actually set out that evening with the express intention of killing anyone! Its a good thing to set a precedent, perhaps to deter other "idiot road speedster/racers/WANNABEES" but I think gloating over the misfortune of others is disgusting.

  • lvhukeya1 - 2012-10-19 10:13
