Johannesburg - Two people have been arrested in Johannesburg for killing farmer Jannie du Plessis on his farm Gretna Green, near Villiers in the Free State, in January, it was reported on Friday.

The men, aged 29 and 33, were arrested in Brixton and Alberton after a month-long search by the Hawks, Beeld reported.

Du Plessis, 64, was shot in the stomach during the attack and spent eight hours locked in a safe with his wife Stinnie, 59. He died in hospital a month later.

His son Org told the newspaper he was grateful for the dedicated and efficient way in which the police had caught the men.

They would appear in the Villiers Magistrate's Court on Friday, on charges of murder, armed robbery, rape and possession of an unlicensed firearm, Beeld reported.

Farmers from the district and members of the Free State Agricultural Union were expected to protest outside the court.
