Johannesburg - Two motorcyclists were killed outright and the pillion passenger of one machine had his leg torn off and was taken to hospital after a head-on collision in Roodepoort on Saturday, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.
Malcolm Midgley said one motorbike was coming up the hill from Hendrik Potgieter Street and the other was coming down the hill from Ontdekkers Road. They met head-on in Christiaan de Wet Drive at Allansnek around 17:40.
Midgley said: "it's most unusual to have two motorbikes collide in this way - it's only the second time in my career I've seen such a thing."
The pillion passenger who suffered what Midgley called "a traumatic amputation of the leg" was taken to a private hospital in Krugersdorp in a serious condition.
The names of the dead would not be released until all their next-of-kin had been informed, Midgley said.
