Health MEC denies linen shortage

2012-09-12 18:00

Durban - KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo has denied reports of a shortage of linen at provincial hospitals, the Mercury reported on Wednesday.

On Monday the newspaper reported that all provincial hospitals were battling to get clean operating theatre linen because the provincial health department's largest laundry, at Sea Cow Lake in Durban, had broken down.

Doctors at Addington Hospital in Durban reportedly threatened to close down operating theatres if the health department did not act to provide clean linen.

Dhlomo said only Addington Hospital was in a crisis, during an interview on Ukhozi FM's current affairs slot on Tuesday.

"Not all hospitals are in crisis. It is only Addington Hospital that faces the problem because its management is either lazy or does not know how to do its job," he was quoted as saying by the Mercury.

Dhlomo said the hospital should explain why it was battling with linen when other hospitals also served by the Durban and coastal regional laundry in Sea Cow lake were not.

Ngwelezana Hospital in Empangeni has also reported linen supply problems.

According to the Mercury the laundry which serves 12 hospitals and nine clinics has three tunnel washing machines, but only one was working. Five other smaller machines were also faulty.

Dhlomo did not comment on how the laundry was coping with the load from 12 hospitals and nine clinics when two of its largest machines were not working.

Yep. Note it's the broken washing machines' fault. Note too - no plan as to how to solve the problem.
