Johannesburg - Two hearses were hijacked in at Southridge Park in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said two armed men hijacked a hearse at a traffic light on Tuesday night.
"They abandoned the vehicle after it got stuck in mud at Kaplan Village outside the city," he said.
The two then went back to the funeral parlour premises, overpowered a guard and took another hearse loaded with equipment, including 13 casket lowering devices.
"We strongly believe that someone operating a funeral parlour is behind this hijacking, it is unusual to hijack a hearse," he said.
He said police were following leads, and a case of hijacking and robbery has been opened.
The first hearse has been recovered, he said.
