Heavy guard for gang rape accused

2012-04-19 11:05

Johannesburg - Seven people, including two minors, accused of gang raping a mentally ill Soweto teenager arrived at the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court under heavy guard on Thursday.

Court proceedings were slightly delayed as the police docket arrived after 09:00 and officials were trying to allocate a courtroom to the case.

The seven were arrested in Dobsonville, Soweto on Tuesday, after they were matched to the descriptions of the rapists seen in a video recording of the attack.

The video of the 17-year-old girl being raped went "viral" on the internet on Wednesday, and was one of the main topics trending on social networking site Twitter.

‘Let them rot in jail’

A group of about 30 women from the ANC's Women's League arrived at the court in a bus dressed in ANC colours.

They were armed with posters reading: "cut their penis - no bail", "let them rot in jail" and "done with rapists", and sang freedom songs.

Members of the girl's family were outside the court. Gauteng safety and security MEC Faith Mazibuko was there to support the girl and her family.

"We need to fight this scourge that is in our communities. All those that are doing wrong things to women must be brought to book," Mazibuko said outside court.

"If you are a man you must use your brain to think, not your trousers."

Child porn

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga told reporters outside court that it was illegal to have a copy of the video, or distribute it.

"The situation of child pornography is a criminal offence... We will charge these people as well," Mhaga said.

The girl went missing on March 21 and was found in a man's house in Braamfischerville, Soweto on Wednesday.

This man was the eighth person arrested for the crime. It was not known when he would appear in court.

Journalists would not be allowed in court to cover proceedings as the case involved minors, but Mhaga would brief them afterwards.

Let them rot in JAIL , Sick Idiots , they do not deserve to see the light of day again

      Eduard - 2012-04-19 11:18

WTF......I hope the guard is not paid by SA Tax payers money......?

      Eduard - 2012-04-19 11:20

Why the hell do we even pay for court cases like these animals when they are clearly guilty....where and when do we use common sense and just sent the animals to prison for life and don't even feed them....

      rbphiri - 2012-04-19 11:22

Animals don't need guards they need a tight leash in prison.

      sudhir.hira - 2012-04-19 11:31

I say what ever a criminal does, the same fate must be bestowed on to him/her. shoot and be shot, murder and be murdered, rape and be raped (by some painful object). People will learn to then keep it in their trousers.

      Savourcard - 2012-04-19 12:30

Maybe we should wait until their guilt or otherwise has been established. They may look like the scumbags, but that doesn't mean they are the scumbags

      James - 2012-04-19 12:45

Agreed, let them rot in jail.Sadly this is a culture in SA and until something like this happens it seems to be swept under the carpet. I am utterly appalled and disgusted that these SICK POND SCUM even exist in our society. HANG THEM. ***BRING THE DEATH PENALTY BACK!!!***

      Chas - 2012-04-19 18:32

@savorcard, hello, they video'd themselves perpatrating the acts/crimes. don't hold your breath to wait for 'legal justice'as someone has already said don't protect them put them back into the waiting angry protesters for justice

  • npretorius2 - 2012-04-19 11:12

Scum!! They can only guard them for so long... pappa wag vir jou!

      Martin - 2012-04-19 11:16

i say set them free, jail is too nice for them

      rbphiri - 2012-04-19 11:25

The only thing that's good about prison is that all criminals have a general consensus of showing hatred towards criminals convicted of rape, through physical violence and rape. Ironically prison has no cameras to help their ass...excuse the pun.

      carpejugulim - 2012-04-19 13:18

why guard them at all ... let them run the gauntlet of the waiting crowd outside the court and if they make it then try them

  • janine.arulnathan - 2012-04-19 11:12

How dumb do you have to be to record yourself and friends committing a GRUESOME and illegal act???!! Its upseting to know that evil and twisetd has no age. How is it that children have been perverted to thinking its okay to do things like this? What is happening to our society...what does our children's futures look like if this is what is happening now?

      npretorius2 - 2012-04-19 11:32

you are confusing dumb with sick, demented and evil....

      Jason - 2012-04-19 14:03

@Margie it's not genetic but more on cultural past, majority of men in todays times have respect for woman across all races, however when it comes to religion I do feel sorry for the Muslim woman. Anyways on topic it would be good to find out from these kids about there up bringing and help determine what causes them to act this way. However these kids will need to be kept out of society for very long and would definitely use them for social experiments so we can prevent this from happening in the future.

      Chas - 2012-04-19 18:27

They know that nothing will happen to them; 1.they are 'minors' 2.they end up being the victim as'they have constitutional rights'

  • Kyle - 2012-04-19 11:13

Now this is where the death penalty would help! Hang them by there tollie! let them starve to death!

      Piet - 2012-04-19 11:36

No just shoot them, much less hassle and much cheaper!

  • Bryan - 2012-04-19 11:14

Scumbag bastards..!!! They all deserve a slow and painful death..!!

  • Tanie - 2012-04-19 11:15

You are wasting time with the court proceedings, everybody knows they will be released on R500 bail soon. Put them down and finish and klaar, you see?

  • Kala - 2012-04-19 11:17

Most of the SAPS members these days are heavy guards.

      rbphiri - 2012-04-19 11:40

HEAVY in every sense of the word. Wonder who is guarding our fast food outlets when these grazing herd converges on these greener pastures.

  • Dawn - 2012-04-19 11:21

Ag sjym..she was mentally ill..can't even imagine want went through her head. Where is her guardians..and I think the boys must have known her,or was she wandering off..shame

  • George - 2012-04-19 11:27

She is mentally ill so clearly we don't expect her to testify. We have more than enough evidence to prove that she was violated. So why is this case taking so long.

  • ryanwiblin - 2012-04-19 11:33

These guys are Pigs! But so is the 17 year old girl's mother.... Who doesn't report their daughter missing??? and mentally disabled as well... Poor girl!!!

      rbphiri - 2012-04-19 11:43

What's even more disgusting is that according to reports this is not the first incident when she has disappeared and officials say that they not pressing any charges of negligance towards the mother. Now that the media spotlight is on her, she has put on a caring face to seem like a genuine mother. How pathetic.

      Kala - 2012-04-19 12:09

Initial reports did say that she had been reported missing about three weeks ago. What then were the police doing about finding her? We should rope in that Soldier to hunt for missing children. He is way more effective.

      Liz - 2012-04-19 12:22

I read in another article that the mother did try to report it, a few times I believe, but apparently the cops turned her away and didn't want to open a case.

  • Piet - 2012-04-19 11:35

So F$%^$ng typical. Now our tax money and resources are used to protect criminals. Human right only favour the people who has committed in a crime in a democratic country! Human rights is a farce!

  • Gaby - 2012-04-19 11:37

    Thank you ANCWL.

  • colin.langley - 2012-04-19 11:38

Totally disgusted.I don't even know if there is a word that could describe these bastards. This poor child...i can't imagine if she were my own. This is indeed a turning point in SA...we are embarrassed internationally by the viral video....i wonder if the SAPS or Community leaders or Government are going to listen to the people...CRIME is OUT of CONTROL!!!!!!

  • Ofentse - 2012-04-19 11:39

dont waste tax payer's money on this scum's, necklace the bastst#rds

  • Antipoaching - 2012-04-19 11:41

The "minors" should be tried as adults because of the severity of the crime BUT they won't be because criminals, especially young ones, have more rights than law-abiding tax paying citizens.... sick

  • Susan - 2012-04-19 11:42

A lot of woman get raped in this country daily - unfortuanately it doesnt get recorded every time.

  • farmfreund - 2012-04-19 12:00

why are there just 30 woman in protess, there should be 2 mil. people demonstrating men children and woman from all races

  • Ayanda Yaya Khumalo - 2012-04-19 12:01

every hour or minute in this country woman get rape by their father,boyfriends,brothers,uncle...... and woman afraid to come forward and report this to the Police

  • Carla - 2012-04-19 12:07

Sick, sick bastards! I heard on the radio that this poor girl has the mental capacity of a 5year old. I shudder when I think about how terrifying the ordeal must have been for her. They don't deserve to see daylight ever again, minors included.

  • zuksy - 2012-04-19 12:15

The law must play its role to punish those stupid boys, who don't have ability to control themselves in the community....

  • Gavin - 2012-04-19 12:15

Such bitter irony that the 'children' need proection from the adults, and we need to be protected against the violence of the youth. The future is over and there is no turning back..

  • Jayson - 2012-04-19 12:17

I love this part. Journalists are not allowed in court due to the fact that they are minors. They didn't act like minors when they raped her. DEATH PENALTY.

  • senny.tloubatla - 2012-04-19 12:19

Mentally ill girl, these boys are sick, castrate them. Lock them up so they get a taste of what it means to sexually violated. Sho, a mentally ill girl, our country is sick with a moral cancer.

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-04-19 12:42

better to sentence them to death. why should us taxpayers pay for their holiday in prison?

  • The-third - 2012-04-19 12:28

"...and sang freedom songs." WTF does the Women's League think they are achieving by singing "freedom songs". WTF does a freedom song have to do with this heinous crime? One song fits all?

  • Debra - 2012-04-19 12:30

WTF must we pay for them to live in jail for? BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY AND RID SOCIETY OF THIS EVIL SCOURGE! Bastards!

  • Helen - 2012-04-19 13:01

And once again ANC turn a situation into a political rally - come on guys get real - show people how to love, educate, smile, etc. The aggressive outbursts that have no punch (badly worded posters). Identify the pattern and start changing - no more freedom songs - come on - this is for real not a dress rehearsal of sorts. No more free bus rides

  • lynareheath - 2012-04-19 13:02

Let them all go to jail and get the same treatment - maybe they will enjoy being the victim of a gang rape as I hope that is what they are subjected to in jail - minor or adult - they must learn !!!!

  • Nirosha - 2012-04-19 13:03

We don't need these rapists walking amongst us. Life sentence please.

      The-third - 2012-04-19 13:04

no. death. why must tax payer's be burdened with their existence?

  • Grace - 2012-04-19 13:06

They must let them out on bail so the public can deal with them

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-04-19 13:09

Terrible terrible terrible !! But where was the MEC when the blue light victim was comatose?? And where is the support for this victim? Double standards apply !! IF you are white no support!! Democratic ANC is a myth!!

  • Matshane - 2012-04-19 13:12

Normally when a person has commited a heinous crime, crime of the worst kind, sort of,you,ll hear people say,out of anger and disgust,of cause:Let him/her rot in jail. So,how does one rot in jail while they are being fed,and even schooled? One wishes rotting in jail wasn,t figuretive.Remember, possibility of parole grants them a second chance back into society. How sad.

  • phumlani.mbatha - 2012-04-19 13:17

    hope justice is served

  • Pat - 2012-04-19 15:12

ONLY 30 from ANCWL...if it was a mini-skirt party (sorry march)... Big-Thigh Premier Nomvula would be there dressed to nines semi naked as usual.

  • Mark - 2012-04-19 15:30

The disgusting reality is that if the IOC instituted rape as an Olympic sport, then South Africa would win gold, silver and bronze every four years. Why are we surprised by heinous acts such as this, when this country is led by morally bankrupt, corrupt men?

  • Nikki - 2012-04-19 15:46

Much has been said about human rights violations, prison conditions etc in China. However, if these seven were caught, tried and found guilty over there, swift justice would be meted out ie single bullet to the back of the head. No wasting taxpayers' money on drawn out trials, appeals and so forth :-(

  • Nikki - 2012-04-19 16:06

Much has been said of human rights violations, prison conditions etc in China. However, if these seven were arrested, tried and convicted over there, swift justice would be meted out without delay ie one bullet to the back of the head. There would be no wastage of taxpayers' money on drawn out court trials, appeals and so on and so on :-(

  • Rethamyh - 2012-04-19 16:24

They recorded what they did and now their identies are hidden because they are minors???! If SAPS can't find a court room, ask SAPCA,I am sure they have available dog cages

  • Thembi - 2012-04-20 01:42

Its high time the government must hear our voices as women.Rape is now a fashion in our country no body really cares.all the pleas falls on deaf ears.

  • patricia.kirsten - 2012-04-20 08:10

Castrate them and put them in jail where they will also be raped. Sad thing is that this case will continue for years and eventually be thrown out as they have lost documents / evidence, etc. Happens all the time. There can never be any justice for Rape or any other serious crime as they know they will eventually get off with it. It is just so wrong.
