Johannesburg - Traffic authorities warned motorists on Tuesday morning that several roads east of Johannesburg were flooded due to heavy rains that caused Benoni lake to overflow.

Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said several roads around Benoni lake were closed after the lake flooded.

Roads affected include Tom Jones, Voortrekker and Bunyan streets.

"We advise motorists to use Snake road if they want to go to Benoni," said Nhlapo.

There were also problems with flooding on the Benoni side of Pomona road in Kempton Park, he said.

Also, the R24 approaching the Gillooly's interchange and the N12 were affected by heavy rains.

"Cars cannot move from Gillooly's to the N12... Motorists are advised to use alternative roads," said Nhlapo.

"It's due to the rain and the construction work."
