Johannesburg - A helicopter has crashed near the Rand Airport in Germiston, Gauteng paramedics say.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said in a statement on Wednesday: "The three people [a pilot and two others] on board managed to free themselves from the wreckage."

A woman and the pilot were airlifted to different hospitals.

Jackson said the woman broke her leg and the pilot sustained chest injuries.

The third person, a man, was transported to another hospital by ambulance.

The cause of the crash, which happened just before lunch was not known.

Jackson said the helicopter, a four-seat Robinson 44, was extensively damaged.
