Pretoria - A man accused of last year's murder of Pretoria mother Chanelle Henning lied under oath, the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

This was according to prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who confronted Ambrose Monye over his past during a bail application.

"Mr Monye, you have no respect for bail. You have lied to this court regarding previous convictions. You previously committed crimes while on bail," said Nel.

Monye took the oath on Friday morning before giving evidence at the beginning of his bail application.

Nel told the court he would lead evidence that the former Nigerian Olympic athlete was not a suitable candidate for bail, as he had previously flouted bail conditions.

Monye earlier told the court that he did not have any previous convictions or other pending cases either in South Africa or Nigeria.

Nel said while out on bail on an unrelated murder charge, Monye committed more crimes.

He was referring to Monye’s arrest in 2009 for the murder of Neville Olivier following a road rage incident.

After a three-year trial, Monye was acquitted on 8 November last year - the same day Henning was fatally gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

"Mrs Henning was shot at 07:00 and you were acquitted when the court begins its session, usually at 09:00. The crime was committed while you were still on bail," said Nel.

He said while Monye was on bail, before being acquitted, he was arrested for assaulting a woman and for possession of drugs.

"You paid admission of guilt for these two offences while you were on bail, isn’t that so?" asked Nel.

Monye replied that he had not committed the crimes, saying he only paid the fines to "put away" the matters.

Nel said Monye had no fixed abode and had no legal earnings.

He said he would give more evidence of Monye's involvement in crime while on bail.

Monye earlier told the court that he was a South African citizen and had denounced his original Nigerian citizenship "some years ago".

Charges against Monye and co-accused Andre Gouws were transferred to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria from  19 to 30 November.

Together with Gouws, Monye faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Monye, Gouws, Preshan Singh, Willem Pieterse, and former Pretoria police detective Gerhardus du Plessis were arrested in November for killing Henning.

Du Plessis and Pieterse were convicted on 14 December and sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment each under a plea bargain.

They pleaded guilty to the murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition.

Singh is currently conducting plea bargaining negotiations with the State.

Two men on a motorbike shot the assistant teacher dead while she was driving along Manitoba Drive in Faerie Glen, east of Pretoria.

She had just dropped off her child at a pre-school.

Monye's bail application was postponed to 26 June.
