Cape Town - A 53-year-old man will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after being caught on the N2 with thousands of dried abalone worth R1.2m.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said in a statement that the Cape Town K9 Unit received a tip-off about a vehicle transporting abalone from Kleinmond to Bellville on Monday.

Officers were then sent to patrol the N2 freeway between Sir Lowry's Pass and Somerset West.

"At approximately 06:30 they spotted a white Volkswagen Caddie panel van on the N2 opposite Lwandle and pulled it over. Upon searching the vehicle, they recovered numerous cardboard boxes containing dried abalone," he said.

"The driver of the vehicle, a 53-year-old man from Hermanus, was arrested and the vehicle seized."

Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries counted the abalone at the Lwandle police station, where it was confirmed that a total of 7 270 abalone had been seized.
