Cape Town - A man nabbed after a high speed chase on the N2 is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was found in possession of abalone worth over R1m.

The 35-year-old suspect was caught on Thursday night when police spotted a “suspicious vehicle” on the N2 travelling from Hermanus, said police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

“A high speed chase ensued and police managed to stop the vehicle,” she said.

“Several bags containing 6 965 abalones with an estimated street value of R1.7m were found.”

Further investigations revealed that the vehicle transporting the contraband had been stolen in Strandfontein in March last year.

The suspect was arrested for contravening the Marine Living Resources Act and possession of a stolen vehicle, Rwexana confirmed.
