Hijacked Durban man found after 3 days

Durban - A man who was hijacked in Hillcrest, outside Durban, has been found, the Witness reported on Friday.

Leon van Rensburg's family informed authorities on Thursday night that he had communicated with them and was being taken back to his New Germany home, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Family spokesperson Rob Gardner said the 52-year-old called a family friend in Howick from Underberg to let his family know he was alive.

"They are all feeling pretty good. It's been a hard three days," Gardner said.

He said details of how Van Rensburg got to Underberg were still vague.

On Tuesday at 10:41 Van Rensburg sent an SMS to his daughter Megan, saying: "Help, hijacked".

Megan's cellphone was off at the time as she was still at school and she only received the message hours later.

According to The Witness, Van Rensburg's white Toyota Tazz was found on Wednesday abandoned on a farm near Kokstad.

Shirley Craig says... @Bianca, sometimes this can be a bit more complex than that and it depends on cultural nuances. In Australia, for example, you are called Aboriginal if only one parent is Aboriginal, and so it goes through the generations, and you are still Aboriginal even if you look white (no offense intended to Aboriginal people)--so it is largely due to culture that this happens, but you might actually be of mixed race. Similarly with Jewish people--you are Jewish if your mother is Jewish, irrespective of your father, and of course also if you decide to remain in the Jewish culture. You can also become Jewish by a conversion process, and going to synagogue and following the culture. There were recently people who moved to Israel and who looked Indian! Race has nothing to do with being Jewish, it is culture alone. So if this can happen in these examples, surely we can all just be called South African as we live in one country and are all South Africans by the country's culture?
