Hijacked Durban man found after 3 days

2012-10-12 08:50

Durban - A man who was hijacked in Hillcrest, outside Durban, has been found, the Witness reported on Friday.

Leon van Rensburg's family informed authorities on Thursday night that he had communicated with them and was being taken back to his New Germany home, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Family spokesperson Rob Gardner said the 52-year-old called a family friend in Howick from Underberg to let his family know he was alive.

"They are all feeling pretty good. It's been a hard three days," Gardner said.

He said details of how Van Rensburg got to Underberg were still vague.

On Tuesday at 10:41 Van Rensburg sent an SMS to his daughter Megan, saying: "Help, hijacked".

Megan's cellphone was off at the time as she was still at school and she only received the message hours later.

According to The Witness, Van Rensburg's white Toyota Tazz was found on Wednesday abandoned on a farm near Kokstad.

poliodonkey represents what is not only wrong with SA but with the world. Nobody minds if a troll comments every now and then, but try not te be so uninformed.

seriously...i like humor and Polo just gives us for free, no need to pay and watch Trevor Noah. Sorry guys but Polo is jus humorous com on hey

      hugh.robinson.56 - 2012-10-12 18:09

Right on Themba. Me too. This smacks of a set up. He phones a friend and not the police when released and no one has details. He SMs's his daughter not wife or son. He communicates with his family they seem to have collected him and taken him home. Sorry the odds are that he was not hi-jacked but trying to escape something.

      johan.fou - 2012-10-12 20:28

Let's get back to the topic guys. I am very glad Leon is OK. If by any chance something is not legit here, it will come out eventually and in good time. For now, I am just happy the headline of the article reads: "Hijacked Durban man found after 3 days" and not: "Hijacked Durban man's body found after 3 days".

      johan.fou - 2012-10-12 20:31

PS: I'm especially glad for his family. Can you imagine what hell his daughter would have gone through for the rest of her life had he not been ok? We all know it wasn't her fault, but a human being a human, she would have tortured herself with "what if's" Now that he's ok, I'm glad for his family...especially for her.

  • nikondaniel - 2012-10-12 08:55

    YIPPPEEEEEE !!!!!! :)

  • delish7564 - 2012-10-12 08:56

Thank you News24, you have restored my faith in your reporting :) Delighted to hear he is OK.......hope he and his family can get over this and continue on with their lives.

      marie.salzwedel - 2012-10-12 09:47

Some people can't read!! A thumb up or down mean they are hitchiking!!!!

  • sanchez.sancho.7 - 2012-10-12 09:00

good news to start off my day, give me more good news, give Jub Jub a long sentence

Oh wow yay this is awesome news!!! Those 3 days must have felt like a lifetime to the family..I could give the guy a hug too just for being safe at home!!! Glad you home!!

  • Hemlock - 2012-10-12 09:05

Wonderful news. Pleased to read this man is safe.

  • hein.huyser - 2012-10-12 09:05

    Now this is good news

  • PumaFred - 2012-10-12 09:06

Something does not add up. It's great that his back home but why make his way to relatives instead of going to nearest police station. And please don't come with the whole story of the police won't do anything crap

      bond.ndalo - 2012-10-12 09:31

      @Pumafred....Spot on.

      heibrin.venter - 2012-10-12 09:40

@PumaFred: I've actually taken the time to read the article a second time, can you point out where it says he went to relatives first?? It says that he contacted them first, and they let the authorities know. So answer this: if YOU are hijacked, whom would you call first, your family, or the police??

      DarrenCooper68 - 2012-10-12 09:42

Some detail seems a bit odd and raises a few quetions in my mind. Regardless, he is back home and in 1 piece and his poor family can breathe a sigh of relief.

      bond.ndalo - 2012-10-12 09:47

@heibrin.venter....I will contact family first and then contact the authourities....in this case he didn't...WHY?

      konrad.rontgen - 2012-10-12 11:05

if you read the article you will note,he made contact with a family friend, who then informed his family. why didnt he phone his family himself. i hope im wrong, something smells fishy

      a.j.bosch - 2012-10-12 15:16

@Heilbrin. **Leon van Rensburg's family informed authorities on Thursday night that he had communicated with them and was being taken back to his New Germany home** to me that sounds like he was on his way home already and had still not bothered to inform the authorities himself. The next few days/weeks will be interesting as this story unfolds.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-10-12 18:38

Yeah that what I am saying, why didnt he text his wife?

  • mbonyathi - 2012-10-12 09:08

    how was he found?

      a.j.bosch - 2012-10-12 15:17

It sounds like he found himself

  • mike.rockey - 2012-10-12 09:09

Not wishing to be a killjoy but I hope there isnt more to this story. Hijacked for a Toyota Tazz? Surely not.

      azande.futhi - 2012-10-12 09:14

if the criminals wanted to use for few hours, they would hijack the man.

      foc.us.10004 - 2012-10-12 09:16

These b@st@rds kill for a cell-phone or R20 .... so dont be surprised!!

      gaynor.paynter - 2012-10-12 09:32

There could be something in what you say Mike.. but he's home, that's the main thing and maybe now recovery or healing can occur.

      comurray - 2012-10-12 09:44

@mike.rockey. Quite a number of hijacks are just because some thugs only need a vehicle for free transport to a certain destination and is usually a vehicle that is not too flashy so will not easily attract attention.

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-10-12 09:48

To hijack a car to take them home to Kokstad is cheaper than a taxi.

      mike.rockey - 2012-10-12 09:51

and he had his cell phone on him cos he could sms his daughter; then why not phone someone? he was missing for 3 days. surely in that time he could have gotten signal somewhere.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-10-12 10:43

ANd they didnt ask for his cell phone? that's usually the fisrt thing they take from you, I've been a vitim twice, i know.

  • mark.felmore - 2012-10-12 09:10

Some good news for a change

  • gershwin.bazier - 2012-10-12 09:10

      gungets.tuft - 2012-10-12 17:23

Well, today she is good. Not so good 3 days ago when the chap was hijacked. Hey, it's ok, everyone has bad days, but nobody asks me for anything when I just burned them 3 days earlier.

  • diana.gill.18 - 2012-10-12 09:24

Great, i was really worried about mr. Leon. Despite being interested in the circumstances of his escape or reason of a hit lets leave it as it is. The most important is that the family is reunited.

  • jody.beggs - 2012-10-12 09:25

Much better than finding a body ! Damn the cANCer killing the country.

  • gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-12 09:55

It makes me want to vomit when I see that there are actually people out there who are unhappy to see that a father has been re-united with his family. To those people I would just like to say that I hope you have a wonderful life, and can see your own children grow up to be good solid citizens of a prosperous South Africa, where hate, greed, corruption and racism are only unpleasant memories.

      gungets.tuft - 2012-10-12 17:25

Nobody is unhappy that he has been found. I am glad he is home but I don't for an instant think he was hijacked. Wait, they will fill in the blanks and find he has had some sort of "episode" and this came to an end today. Call me cynical ...

  • gillian.sanderson - 2012-10-12 09:58

finally something to smile about! yeah!!!

  • steveroodt - 2012-10-12 10:17

I have been following this incident but the reporting has not been great but my question is why did he sms his daughter who was at school and not his wife or older son but lets wait for his story only glad that he is safe

      ivan.goodman.77 - 2012-10-12 14:17

Wonder if he was allowed one sms only.

  • tumisang.kolobe - 2012-10-12 10:18

His plan failed because now it was in the news!!!

  • teddy.beer.319 - 2012-10-12 10:20

This doesn't pass the smell test for me. Good he is alive for his family and also to give details. If really he was hijacked, then the law has a very long arm with a hook at the end for the culprits.

  • peter.brown.940436 - 2012-10-12 10:34

Very happy he has been found, interesting to find out the whole true story !!!!!!!!

    good news indeed.

  • byron.smith.355744 - 2012-10-12 10:51

glad he is OK, but there is something fishy about this....he was probably with another woman....ppl dont just disappear for three days

      delish7564 - 2012-10-13 08:09

I hope you're wrong about the "other woman". If this is the case, he can't care much for his daughter if he would send such an SMS - she must have been beside herself with fear when she read it......how cruel would that be?

  • pvjohnson1 - 2012-10-12 11:30

@philschalkwyk-now you've gone and made your name "tottie".

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-10-12 11:44

Ah what a nice Friday story! So happy for the family!!!

  • ivan.goodman.77 - 2012-10-12 12:07

I'm not a hijacker but I don't think I will keep him for three days, with his pic all over the papers, something's not rite, unless he was hijacked by white guys.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-12 12:54

What a relief. Here I was expecting bad news again.

  • cynthia.smith.71619533 - 2012-10-12 12:56

So glad Mr. van Rensburg is safe. That is something to be very grateful for.

  • hennie.buys1 - 2012-10-12 13:58

Definately a good ending to a bad story...unluckily that happens way too little....he's a lucky man :)

      jack.masterp - 2012-10-12 15:53

He is a very lucky man he shud thank god he is alive

  • charmy1969 - 2012-10-12 13:59

You hijacked but they don't take your phone? You sms your daughter in school not your wife? As a parent can you really put your child in a position like that? I am very eager to hear the true story behind this saga.

      silas.mooi - 2012-10-12 14:07

... the elder kid is in varsity, meaning he had a better chance of reaching him rather than the daughter. Nonetheless, good he is alive!!

      goldwright - 2012-10-12 17:21

Exactly. Not to make light of being hijacked, but when one gets hijacked, the hijackers are only usually interested in the vehicle, so they will either point a gun at you, take your purse/phone/valuables and leave you on the road or they will shoot you after taking what they want. So why did he go missing for three days? Not a "normal" hijacking scenario....... ????? A business deal gone wrong? Kidnapped for money? Maybe he just needed to disappear for three days for some reason or other? Will be interesting to hear the truth..........

  • silas.mooi - 2012-10-12 14:05

    Great news indeed!!!

  • maxndaba - 2012-10-12 15:19

What's happening in Hillcrest these days?

  • shubnam.patel - 2012-10-12 17:32

First of all if he was hijacked, the hijackers wouldve taken his phone as soon as they hijacked him...dah
