Johannesburg - A hijacked bus crashed into a car and overturned, blocking traffic on Durban's M4 Ruth First Highway's north bound carriageway, emergency services said on Sunday.

"The bus had been stolen from Soldiers' Way and the hijacker was making his way out of the city when the accident occurred," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks in a statement.

The stolen bus, which was empty, crashed into a vehicle and then flipped on its side.

The driver of the car was seriously injured and was transported to a nearby hospital after being stabilised by paramedics at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the hijacked bus fled into dense bush.

He is being sought by police.

Meanwhile, a second accident occurred in the traffic jam caused by the accident involving the hijacked bus.

"A full minibus taxi collided with a car in the traffic jam," said Wicks.

Thirteen occupants of the taxi were injured, but escaped from the wrecked taxi before paramedics arrived at the scene. They were treated by medics before being transported by ambulance to Durban's Addington Hospital.
