Johannesburg - A 32-year-old suspected hijacker and fuel robber was shot dead in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
He was one of three men who allegedly hijacked a vehicle on Friday night, filled up R250 worth of diesel at a service station and fled without paying, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.
"Police were informed immediately and the hijacked car was spotted nearby. There was a high-speed car chase and the suspects opened fire on police".
Police retaliated and the car driver was shot dead. The two other occupants fled and were being sought.
