Hijacker shot in shoot-out with cops

2011-12-07 07:18

Durban - A man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a hijacking in Chatsworth, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The 29-year-old was arrested after he was shot in the leg during a police chase, said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Police chased a hijacked Mercedes-Benz with three men inside, and a shoot-out ensued.

The car stopped in Bradfield Road and the three tried to flee on foot.

One of them was shot. The other two managed to get away, said Mdunge.

The 29-year-old was expected to appear soon in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on charges of hijacking and attempted murder.

great work, its needed over the xmas period

  • Michael - 2011-12-07 07:38

Why when it becomes a foot chase, can our cops never catch anyone?

      Anthony - 2011-12-07 07:41

      to fat maybe?

      desmond.subramani - 2011-12-07 08:23

Hahahah...Michael. And why doesnt the guy thats caught help trace the others. Its great that we catch one of them, but it's be a lot better if they were all behind bars.

      richard.hipkin - 2011-12-07 08:34

@Anthony, would love to see you run after three possibly armed men, as an ex-cop your training teaches you to be cautious not stupid.. Dumb people irritate me..

      Maai - 2011-12-07 08:50

      KFC?

      Leonard - 2011-12-07 09:21

Pointblank er.. are the cops not also armed?? If I phone in and reported an armed robber in my house their training would kick in and then that being recognised as a dangerous situation not would not repond... Ag Please man hey

      Michael - 2011-12-07 10:30

@anthony. Your logic is quite silly to say the least. If someone is running away from you, you have the distinct advantage of having his fat ass facing you, rather than his more dangerous anterior. There are a few options that I can think of, chase until you get close enough to shout "freeze d00s" and point your weapon right up his fat behind. It is a lot more difficult, and almost impossible to shoot over your shoulder whilst running away, than it is to chase someone and shoot, i can go on. You can see where I am going with this? Few more options I can go on about that being part of a policeman's job, how in most countries, police are trained in some form of martial arts\self defense, train to keep fit, trained how to catch running away thugs (chasing criminals is probaly their main function is it not? or is it eating kfc and arresting people who look like they do drugs?)But from reading article, after bloody article, of the bad guys, stopping the car and getting away on foot, it becomes painfully obvious that we have a police force, that just cannot run. For what reason, i will leave it to everyone else to debate.

Michael - It's fat pal fat and lazy!

      Steenbra - 2011-12-07 11:04

The article mentioned the guys got caught...Whats the big deal. There are cops doing sterling work and usual there more than enough pessimists. Not so long ago an icident went down in our street and not a single neighbour even put their head out of the window to see what was happening and as a neighbour said..'no i'm afraid to get hurt'. Shame.. wonder if your house was being burgled or you being attacked what would be your response.. Whn cops do well applaud them..

    Well done. Saving taxpayers money.

  • tbomelamsomi - 2011-12-07 07:49

      Robbie - 2011-12-07 07:52

Only in the good old days tbomelamsomi.

      Barefoot - 2011-12-07 07:58

      That was my first thought

  • Archie - 2011-12-07 07:52

Recommendation,if people that were highjacked are killed then the police should shoot to kill the highjackers. This way the courts and jails cant release them back into society, were it starts all over again. Well done police, we owe you.

      Ben - 2011-12-07 07:58

And just think of the money saved. Good point.

  • Greg - 2011-12-07 07:59

I have been hijacked twice and it gives me such pleasure to see these low life pigs being brought to justice! Big up to Colonel Vincent Mdunge!!!

  • RobertaKeeling - 2011-12-07 08:08

I may sound blood thirsty, but it is a pity the one that was shot wasn't shot between the eyes!

  • DieSeL - 2011-12-07 08:22

shudda shot him "between" the legs... hahaha... Well done to the cops!!!

  • Tammy Petersen - 2011-12-07 08:24

amazing how they can always outrun our policemen. They are so fat think we need to get our cops in shape maybe that would help even if its in the smallest way.

      richard.hipkin - 2011-12-07 08:37

Tammy, this is a stupid comment - were you there? As an ex-cop your training is to be cautious not stupid, ypu don't go flying into a situation whereby you in the car facing three possibly armed thugs on the street, they will clearly have the upper hand and could wipe you out before you even apply the brakes. Gawd people, a little thought and you won't sound so stupid when you make idiotic comments such as the one above..

      Tammy Petersen - 2011-12-07 19:49

oh my word have you taken a look at our police force the army and navy are ten times worse.People need to take some pride in how they look!!!!!They set an example most of them can barely walk let alone run after someone.Ja of course if someone has a gun let them go.Im living in one of the safest areas in Cape Town because we have a fit and dedicated neighbourhood watch who chase after criminals, thats right CHASE not stand around while crime happens.Yes i dont know every detail regarding this case and im not saying every single police officer is obese but far to many of them would make me ashamed to be a cop.

  • basie.pretorius - 2011-12-07 08:40

Put those policemen on suspension and send them back to basics to learn how to shoot Sh1t shots But I suppose they were moving and the policemens reactions were to slow

  • Leonard - 2011-12-07 09:24

The guns could not be deployed fast enough as KFC tend to leave one with greasy hands...

  • Ryan - 2011-12-07 09:32

    aim higher !!!

  • Cristina - 2011-12-07 09:36

Thank you for the good job!..one down but now how many more to go??

  • Jacob - 2012-01-05 11:45

It's the sign of a really sick society that the best news of the day is when a hijacker (or any criminal for that matter) gets shot. It's even better when it's fatal. That means no expensive court case, no dockets to get 'lost', no more criminals being put back on the streets through 'technicalities',no more waste of taxpayer's money to keep the animal in prison etc etc. By way, by sick, I mean sick and tired (of crime).
