Durban - Hijackers dumped a baby in his car seat in the middle of the road before driving off with the mother’s stolen car.

Fortunately someone saw the car seat lying in the road and found the baby unharmed, reported The Mercury.

The mother had stopped her BMW outside a Durban shopping centre and was about to take her baby from the back seat when the hijackers overpowered her and drove off with the baby inside.

Motorist Erik Bredberg told how he was driving along with employees when he saw the baby car seat in the middle of the road.

“At first we thought it was an old seat that someone had thrown out but we all thought it looked a bit new to be thrown out. When we approached there was a baby in it fast asleep,” said Bredberg.

The baby appeared to be just under a year old and was taken to the Mayville police station where officers had heard about the hijacking and knew where to contact the baby’s family.

“They came and got their baby and everybody was happy.”

The car was later found abandoned in Cato Manor.
